Mayor Mamdani unveils fast-track housing court to curb negligent landlords

Mayor Zohran Mamdani revealed the launch of New York City’s Unified Court System, designed to fast-track emergency housing court proceedings. The system will prioritize cases where at least one-third of a building’s units are subject to open vacate orders or pose immediate health and safety risks, such as broken elevators or hazardous utility violations. For instances of persistent, extreme negligence, judges will require parties to reconvene within five days after service is completed.
Mamdani stressed that landlords who cannot comply with the law should not continue to operate the property. He acknowledged ongoing challenges in enforcing compliance for those who miss the five-day deadline. The mayor’s office was contacted for further comment.
