Mayor of Sfântu Gheorghe urges FRF to act on xenophobic chants at football match

Mayor Antal Árpád-András has filed a formal complaint with the Romanian Football Federation over xenophobic and anti-Hungarian chants by Dinamo supporters during a Sepsi OSK match in Sfântu Gheorghe.

Antal Árpád-András, mayor of Sfântu Gheorghe, lodged an official complaint with the Romanian Football Federation concerning xenophobic and anti-Hungarian chants heard from Dinamo supporters during a Sepsi OSK home match. He described the chants as extreme, urging ethnic hatred and the expulsion of Hungarian citizens, and noted that the referee’s brief interruption did not stop the behavior. The mayor stresses that such incidents undermine fair-play, breach national anti-discrimination legislation, and expose families and children to hate.

He demands swift disciplinary sanctions for the club and its fans, mandatory training for referees on anti-racism protocols, and a concrete zero-tolerance plan from the FRF. Additionally, he requests detailed data on past sanctions, fines, and preventive measures taken by the federation over the last three years.

Why it matters

It highlights ongoing ethnic tensions in Romanian football and pressures authorities to enforce anti-discrimination rules.
