Mayoral candidates invited to discuss antisemitism at Toronto synagogue debate
Toronto's top mayoral hopefuls have been asked to join a September 8 debate on antisemitism at a synagogue, with the venue address disclosed only to registrants.
Jewish Lawyers of Canada is organizing a mayoral debate on antisemitism for Toronto's leading candidates on September 8 at 7 p.m., to be held in a synagogue whose address will be provided only to registered participants. The event will feature security personnel and police presence, reflecting recent attacks on Jewish-owned businesses and a girls' school cited by the organization. Approximately 800 registrants are expected, with a capacity of about 1,200 seats, and Canadaland founder Jesse Brown will serve as moderator.
Candidates will be asked to outline municipal responses to intimidation, harassment or violence targeting any group. The debate coincides with Jewish Leadership in Canada Week, running September 8-13. While Chris Alexander has confirmed his attendance, the organizers are still awaiting a response from Mayor Olivia Chow.
Why it matters
The debate highlights growing concerns over antisemitism and how city leaders plan to protect vulnerable communities.
