MCD razes 67 illegal buildings, seals nine after deadly PG collapse

In response to the fatal collapse of a five-storey paying-guest building in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, which claimed at least seven lives, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi carried out a two-day enforcement sweep on September 11-12. Officials demolished 67 unauthorized structures and sealed nine additional properties across multiple zones, including large godowns in Karol Bagh and a hotel in the West Zone. The MCD also served show-cause notices to 35 premises and ordered demolition of four more buildings.

As part of a broader safety assessment, the corporation surveyed more than 1,200 PG facilities, flagging three as dangerous and identifying dozens needing repairs. The operation builds on a larger campaign that has, since June, razed 983 properties, sealed 464, and issued thousands of notices to curb illegal construction and commercial misuse of residential spaces.
