McDonald blames Irish Government for risky handling of public sector strike

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald said the government’s approach to recent public-sector walkouts was reckless and urged constructive pay talks.

Mary Lou McDonald, leader of Sinn Féin, accused the Irish government of playing a “game of chicken” with public-sector employees after a nationwide strike involving health, education and civil service staff. She claimed the government should have been negotiating with unions continuously since June, which might have prevented the industrial action. The initial strike on Wednesday was halted after the Public Services Committee of ICTU negotiated a suspension, though work-to-rule measures remain in place.

A second strike planned for the following week was also put on hold after further talks. McDonald emphasized the financial pressures on workers, citing rising costs of fuel, groceries and childcare. Public Expenditure Minister Jack Chambers said he was confident both sides were committed to meaningful negotiations.

Why it matters
