McDonald says senior Garda leadership still blocks whistleblower protections

Mary Lou McDonald opened the Dáil’s Leaders’ Questions by questioning the government’s handling of whistleblower protection within An Garda Síochána, pointing to an RTÉ Investigates documentary set to air. The film follows four Garda officers who allege that the Protected Disclosures Office, created in 2017, has been systematically weakened by senior commanders, with Dr Donal Corcoran describing how he and a colleague were compelled to blow the whistle and subsequently targeted.
McDonald asked why a culture of senior-level hostility has been allowed to persist, recalling the earlier controversy surrounding Maurice McCabe. Taoiseach Micheál Martin responded that he cannot interfere with protected disclosures and suggested the issue was being politicised. Labour leader Ivana Bacik, who has met the whistleblowers, warned that serious failures in firearms practices and ammunition handling were ignored by senior Garda management, citing incidents linked to Detective Colm Horkan’s murder.
