McLaren expands into luxury SUV segment with debut of first sport-utility model

McLaren has announced the launch of its first luxury SUV, marking the company's entry into the high-end sport-utility market.

McLaren, the British marque that secured back-to-back Formula 1 constructors' titles, is venturing into the luxury SUV arena with its inaugural sport-utility vehicle. Historically, the firm has leveraged its racing expertise for road-car projects, exemplified by the ultra-rare McLaren F1 released in 1992. The new SUV initiative comes as the company’s ownership structure shifted, with Abu-Dhabi sovereign-fund CYVN Holdings—now operating as L’imad—acquiring Bahrain’s state-owned Mumtalakat stake in the McLaren holding.

Both sovereign investors now jointly own McLaren Automotive, providing the financial backing for the SUV development. The announcement signals McLaren’s strategy to broaden its product portfolio beyond supercars while capitalising on its racing pedigree.
