McLaren to add 1,000 jobs in the UK with £450m tech centre investment

McLaren announced a £450 million investment in its Woking technology hub that will create 1,000 new positions, boosting the UK automotive sector.

McLaren disclosed a £450 million injection into its technology centre near its Woking plant, a move that will create 1,000 jobs across direct, indirect and agency categories. The company, which merged with premium EV startup Forseven Holdings, now employs roughly 2,500 people. The hiring surge arrives just days after Jaguar Land Rover revealed a plan to eliminate 4,000 positions as it restructures amid falling sales, tariff pressures and a recent cyber-attack.

McLaren’s automotive division was bought last year by CYVN Holdings, an Abu Dhabi-based investor, which pledged $2 billion over five years to revive the loss-making group. The broader European auto industry is under strain from fast-growing Chinese manufacturers and looming 10 % EU tariffs on UK-built electric cars, which also disqualify them from “made in Europe” subsidies.

Why it matters

The investment creates jobs and signals confidence in the UK car industry amid wider sector challenges.
