MCMC convenes e-commerce giants and ministries to tighten consumer safeguards
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission gathered major online marketplaces and government ministries to coordinate new consumer-protection measures for the country's e-commerce sector.
On Oct 7 in Putrajaya, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission organized a coordination meeting with leading e-commerce platforms—including Grab, Lazada Malaysia/Alibaba, Facebook Marketplace, Pinduoduo, SHEIN, Shopee Malaysia and TikTok Shop—and a wide array of ministries and agencies. The gathering responded to public concerns over consumer safety and regulatory compliance, echoing Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil’s call for tighter cooperation among government bodies and platform providers.
Participants discussed creating a balanced environment for online and physical retailers, incorporating feedback from SMEs and the retail sector, and addressing impacts on the courier industry. Platform operators were urged to strengthen seller-identity verification and ensure product listings meet legal standards, while enhancing monitoring tools to quickly remove prohibited, dangerous or illegal goods. MCMC highlighted the goal of establishing a structured cooperation framework to aid investigations and enforcement by relevant authorities. The commission pledged ongoing coordination with ministries, agencies and industry players to improve consumer protection, legal compliance and platform accountability in Malaysia’s e-commerce ecosystem.
