MCMC launches probe into hacked and blocked WhatsApp accounts

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced an investigation into a wave of complaints about WhatsApp accounts that have been hacked, blocked or rendered unusable. In its statement, MCMC clarified that account compromise and platform blocking are separate problems: hijacked accounts can be exploited for scams or spam, which may lead WhatsApp to block them. Affected users are advised to use WhatsApp’s official recovery process, enable the Two-Step Verification feature, and never share verification codes or PINs.

The commission also cautioned the public about third-party services that promise account recovery for a fee or personal data. If official channels do not resolve the issue, users may lodge a formal complaint with MCMC, which will then refer the matter to Meta for clarification and possible remedial action. MCMC pledged ongoing monitoring and cooperation with the platform to protect users.
