Meat industry groups warn ICE sweeps could push beef prices higher

Industry groups representing cattle feeders and meatpackers in Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma warned that recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity is creating staffing gaps that halt cattle shipments and force plant closures. The Texas Cattle Feeders Association, Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association and Kansas Livestock Association said the disruptions have already cost millions of dollars and could translate into higher beef prices for shoppers.

Workers in southwest Kansas have reported increased absences after seeing federal officers in their communities, though the Department of Homeland Security says no workplace raids are occurring. Plants in Dodge City, Liberal and Garden City have temporarily stopped processing cattle, sending animals back to feedlots and raising animal-health and financial concerns. Senators Roger Marshall and Jerry Moran expressed worry and urged better coordination, while DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said ICE is focusing on “heinous criminals.”
