Media investigation identifies over 258,000 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine

Mediazona, working with one outlet Russian service, has authenticated the names of 258,989 Russian servicemen killed in the conflict with Ukraine, a jump of more than 10,000 entries within less than two weeks due to a leaked list of bodies exchanged between the belligerents. Each addition was verified through official registries, and the list now records 7,692 officers and roughly 20,500 conscripted soldiers, though the latter is considered a substantial underestimate because recent obituaries often omit recruitment details.

Dates of death are available for 241,600 individuals, while data for the most recent months is still being compiled. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky cited a report from Commander-in-Chief Mykhailo Drapatyi that 10,660 Russian troops were killed or wounded in the past week, and the Ukrainian General Staff estimates total Russian personnel losses at 1,528,970 since the invasion began. The figures illustrate the ongoing heavy toll on Russian forces, though precise numbers remain contested and unverifiable by independent sources.
