Media outlets face record DDoS onslaught as wars and World Cup fuel attacks

Cloudflare’s latest threat report identifies publishing and media organizations as the top target of distributed denial-of-service attacks in 2026, representing 14.2% of all incidents since the start of the year. The sector experienced nearly four times more attacks than the second-ranked gambling industry and six times more in the second quarter alone. Blake Darché of Cloudflare explained that attackers focus on silencing news during peak moments such as elections, conflicts or major sporting events, because information loses value quickly.

The uptick coincides with the wars in Ukraine and Iran and the global attention on the FIFA World Cup, which have spurred pro-Russia and pro-Iran hacktivist campaigns. Supporting data from Akamai and Palo Alto Networks show a 245% rise in cybercrime and a noticeable increase in pro-Russia activity after the Iran conflict began. While hyper-volumetric attacks exceeding 1 Tbps are rare, Cloudflare mitigated 805 such network-layer assaults in Q2, a 519% jump from Q1, underscoring the growing scale of the threat.
