Medieval Europe endured a cascade of continent-wide floods in 1342-1343

New research shows that sixteen major floods struck much of Europe between late 1341 and 1343, overturning the view that the Magdalena Flood was the sole extreme event of the period.

Analysis of over a thousand contemporary sources and natural proxies has identified sixteen major flood events across Europe between late 1341 and 1343, four of which are estimated to recur only once every five to ten centuries. The Magdalena Flood, long regarded as the singular medieval megaflood, is now understood to have been one episode in a rapid succession of extreme floods that made 1342 the most flood-intense year in the last 700 years, with 1343 also ranking among the top ten.

Direct fatalities numbered in the thousands, while secondary deaths from famine and disease followed the widespread destruction of bridges, roads, and settlements. The disaster prompted a paradigm shift in flood mitigation, leading to the construction of stone bridges, stronger town walls, regulated river sections, and substantial dykes. Climate reconstructions point to a cluster of volcanic eruptions and a prolonged retreat of Arctic sea ice as plausible drivers of the anomalous precipitation and atmospheric circulation. The study highlights the need for flood risk strategies that can address the possibility of multiple, closely spaced megafloods in the future.
