Medieval Skeleton May Be First Documented Victim of a Trebuchet

A 14th-century skeleton uncovered at Stirling Castle shows injuries that researchers believe result from a trebuchet, possibly the earliest known case.

Archaeologists unearthed eight medieval bodies at Stirling Castle in 1997, one of which—Skeleton 150—bears 167 fractures, including a skull shattered in 61 places and a complex series of rib breaks. Carbon-14 dating places the individual in the early 1300s, aligning with Edward I’s 1304 siege during which the king employed a massive trebuchet called the “War Wolf.” Bioarchaeologist Jo Buckberry and anthropologist Patrick Randolph-Quinney argue that the injury pattern is consistent with a high-speed projectile from a siege engine rather than other battlefield trauma.

Their findings were shared at the European Paleopathology Association meeting in Berlin, marking what could be the first documented instance of “trebuchet trauma.” The victim, likely a young defender, appears to have been struck from behind and pinned to the ground instantly. While a direct link to the War Wolf cannot be confirmed, the study offers rare physical evidence of the lethal power of medieval siege weapons.
