Mediterranean warming and salinity surge reveal rapid ocean changes

A new study shows the Mediterranean is heating and becoming saltier faster than before, with significant changes reaching several thousand meters deep.

A team of oceanographers compiled five decades of temperature and salinity measurements from research cruises and autonomous floats, revealing that the Mediterranean is warming and becoming saltier at an accelerating pace. The most rapid changes occur in the central and eastern parts of the sea, with surface temperatures now roughly 2 °C above the 1950-1999 baseline and deep-water alterations detectable down to 3-4 km.

In the Adriatic Sea, warming and increased salinity have penetrated the seafloor, and deep water there has warmed about six times faster than the typical Mediterranean rate since 2000. While warmer water reduces density, rising salinity adds weight, altering the balance that drives deep-sea circulation. The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, warns that these unprecedented shifts could foreshadow similar rapid changes in the world’s larger oceans as long as fossil-fuel use continues.
