Megafon received multi-hundred-million forints from companies linked to Lőrinc Mészáros

Internal documents show that construction firms owned by Lőrinc Mészáros transferred several hundred million forints to the pro-Fidesz media outlet Megafon between 2022 and 2024.

Dokuments obtained by Direkt36 detail a pattern of sizable transfers from firms tied to Lőrinc Mészáros to the right-wing media network Megafon. In 2022, V-Híd Zrt. sent 310 million forints, and Kontúr Csoport Kft. added 100 million just weeks before the national election. The following year, R-Kord Kft. entered a sponsorship agreement earmarking 217 million forints for Megafon, despite financial difficulties on a state-funded railway project.

Further records show 220 million forints directed to Filep Dávid’s Aktuális Média Kft., which produced pro-government videos. Martin József Péter of Transparency International Hungary called the arrangement a “vicious circle” of state contracts and private propaganda financing. The State Audit Office’s review concluded there was no evidence of illegal campaign financing, and Megafon’s leadership declined to comment.

Why it matters

The funding links reveal how state-linked businesses may channel public money into partisan media, raising concerns about transparency and influence.
