Meituan targets $1 billion offshore yuan bond to refinance debt
Chinese food-delivery giant Meituan is seeking roughly $1 billion through a new offshore yuan bond, its second dim-sum offering, to refinance existing loans.
Meituan announced plans to raise the equivalent of about $1 billion via an offshore yuan bond, its second foray into the dim-sum market, with pricing expected on Tuesday. The company received Chinese regulator clearance for a larger offshore raise but chose to reserve part of the quota for dollar-bond refinancing when conditions improve, noting the quota expires next September. The move follows a slowdown in competition after a government crackdown, which helped Meituan deliver a surprise quarterly profit and scale back overseas expansion.
Funds will primarily refinance existing offshore yuan loans, complementing a $3 billion dollar and yuan securities issuance last year. Meituan expects capital expenditure of around 20 billion yuan in 2026, modestly rising in 2027, and continues developing its LongCat AI models, though at a slower pace than rivals Alibaba and ByteDance. The broader dim-sum market has surged to over 1 trillion yuan this year, highlighted by Tencent’s recent 26 billion-yuan note sale.
Why it matters
The bond will provide Meituan with cheaper financing and reflects growing demand for yuan-denominated offshore debt.
