Melbourne man arrested at airport for possessing ISIS propaganda

Australian Federal Police detained a 30-year-old Roxburgh Park resident at Melbourne Airport as he tried to fly to the Middle East, charging him with possession of violent extremist material tied to Islamic State. A specialist forensic review of his seized devices uncovered graphic ISIS propaganda, leading to a potential five-year jail term and a court appearance on Sunday. The arrest is part of a broader crackdown on an online network that exchanged extremist content, marking the sixth Melbourne case linked to a shared group chat.

The man also violated a Crimes Act requirement to surrender his electronic devices after a court order. One outlet Counterterrorism Commander Paula Hudson emphasized early intervention to prevent escalation toward violence, noting the harmful impact of such material on the community. Earlier arrests in May and June involved five other men from the same area, all charged with similar offenses.
