Melbourne Man Charged as Key IS Propagandist Linked to Fled Queensland Doctor

A Melbourne court heard that Mohamed Musse Bakit was a central figure in spreading Islamic State propaganda, receiving material from Dr Omer Elamin, a doctor who escaped to Syria in 2016.

In a Melbourne Magistrates’ Court hearing, prosecutors presented evidence that Mohamed Musse Bakit acted as a major distributor of Islamic State propaganda, sending thousands of videos, images and documents to a WhatsApp network of radicalised users. The material originated from Dr Omer Elamin, a Queensland-trained doctor who fled Australia in 2016 to join IS fighters and allegedly handed Bakit a yellow USB drive loaded with extremist content.

Digital analysis shows Bakit contributed roughly 67 % of the group’s uploads - 9,754 messages, 391 images, 1,609 audio files, 811 videos and over 400 documents - between November 2015 and July 2020. The case emerged after Border Force officers discovered suspicious items in Bakit’s luggage before a 2020 flight to Egypt, prompting a covert JCTT investigation that began in 2021. While Bakit faces multiple terrorism-related charges, other participants in the chat have not been charged, and his defence cites severe health issues and a 2023 stroke. A magistrate will decide on bail at a later date.

Why it matters

It shows how overseas extremist networks can operate within Australia, prompting tighter counter-terrorism scrutiny.
