Melbourne's M80 Ring Road Upgrade Uses Waste to Build Every Pavement Layer

The M80 Ring Road stretch between Sydney Road and Edgars Road was rebuilt using recycled plastics, glass and reclaimed asphalt, marking Victoria's first major road to contain recycled material in all pavement layers.

In 2022, the M80 Ring Road segment linking Sydney Road and Edgars Road underwent a $518 million upgrade that integrated recycled content throughout every pavement layer, a first for a major Victorian road project. The construction used material equivalent to 35.5 million plastic bags, more than 22 million glass bottles, around 800,000 toner cartridges and 820 passenger-car tyres, alongside 51,000 tonnes of reclaimed asphalt and other recycled pavement.

Over 400,000 tonnes of waste were either recycled or sent for reuse instead of landfill, and the project employed eMesh, a reinforcement product made entirely from recycled plastic. The four-kilometre stretch now features additional lanes, upgraded interchanges, ramp metering and a smart freeway management system, serving an estimated 165,000 motorists each day. Major Road Projects Victoria and Victoria’s Big Build highlighted the initiative as a demonstration of how large-scale infrastructure can divert waste from landfills while reducing reliance on virgin construction materials.
