Melbourne teen sentenced to eight-and-a-half years for fatal crash and prior assault

A teenager received an eight-and-a-half-year prison term after killing a friend in a car crash, following a judge-described “inhumane” assault that left another man permanently brain-injured.

The court handed down an eight-and-a-half-year sentence to a teen who caused a fatal collision that killed his friend. Earlier, the same offender was convicted of a violent attack in which the victim was kicked and stomped, resulting in lifelong brain damage. The judge labeled the earlier assault as “inhumane.” Under the ruling, the teen must serve at least four-and-a-half years before parole eligibility.

Why it matters

The case shows how serious violent behavior by a minor can lead to lengthy imprisonment and raises public safety concerns.
