Mélenchon demands prison for military chaplain after controversial sermon video

Jean-Luc Mélenchon condemned a video showing a 3e RPIMa chaplain delivering a politically charged sermon and called for his imprisonment.

Le Canard enchaîné posted footage of a mass held before members of the 3e RPIMa in Carcassonne, where the chaplain’s sermon framed religious builders against political leftists, drawing applause from the audience. Jean-Luc Mélenchon reacted sharply on X, labeling the chaplain’s statements as racist insults and seditious, and declared that the cleric should be incarcerated. He further demanded that the soldiers present at the ceremony be identified and subjected to disciplinary action.

Mélenchon emphasized that certain roles, such as military chaplains, must adhere to strict neutrality and discipline. The episode has reignited debate over the limits of free speech for military chaplains. Critics argue the call for an “epuration” of the regiment echoes historical periods of political purges.
