Mercadona opens 76th Portuguese store as Algarve launch looms
Mercadona inaugurated its 76th supermarket in Vila Real, marking its first store in the district and paving the way for its upcoming Algarve openings.
Mercadona’s rapid rollout in Portugal hit a new milestone with the opening of its 76th store in Vila Real, the first in that district, after a €9.5 million investment. The supermarket covers roughly 1,900 square metres and has created 74 permanent jobs. This expansion follows the chain’s entry into Portugal in 2019 and its recent moves into Castelo Branco, Beja and now Vila Real.
The retailer is preparing two Algarve outlets: one in Portimão’s Nova Vila Retail Park slated for October and another in Faro’s Vale da Amoreira in November, each offering the full Mercadona range and employing staff trained through a €1 million program for over 250 workers. Mercadona’s Portuguese division posted €2.092 billion in sales in 2025, sourcing about €1.5 billion from local suppliers, with logistics bolstered by a €290 million centre in Almeirim to serve southern stores.
Why it matters
The expansion boosts local employment and signals Mercadona’s deepening commitment to the Portuguese market.
