Merced police seize husky after multiple abuse allegations involving homeless owner

In Merced, California, law enforcement rescued a husky called Sweetie after multiple witnesses reported a homeless man abusing the animal, including dragging it on hot pavement and striking it. The Merced SPCA president also observed the man lifting Sweetie by the neck and dropping her. Police have compiled visual evidence and are forwarding the case to the Merced County District Attorney’s Office for possible prosecution.

After an initial veterinary check, Sweetie was returned to her owner, but a later alleged assault outside a Taco Bell prompted officials to take the dog into protective custody again. Lieutenant Kalvin Haygood noted that building a solid case takes time and urged anyone with additional evidence to come forward. Community members expressed relief at the renewed protection but also frustration over the investigation’s pace.
