Mercedes technical director warns of timing dilemma as season progresses

Speaking on the NU Silver Radio Show, Mercedes technical director James Allison highlighted the perennial “switch-off” dilemma that every Formula 1 team faces—when to cease development of the current car and allocate effort to the following year’s package. He warned that the accelerating development pace of competitors makes the timing decision increasingly delicate; stopping too soon could allow rivals to gain a quarter-second per month, while persisting too long may waste resources.

Allison pointed to Mercedes’ strong points tally and ongoing wind-tunnel data as evidence that further performance gains remain available. He also stressed that the second half of the season must prioritize clean, reliable races, after early-season reliability setbacks cost drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli points. Looking ahead, he expects the team to introduce upgrades smoothly while keeping pace with rivals such as McLaren, who appear poised to challenge Mercedes after the summer break.
