Merck and Moderna report mRNA vaccine delays melanoma recurrence in Phase 3 trial
Merck and Moderna said their personalized mRNA vaccine slowed melanoma return and spread when added to Keytruda after surgery.
In a Phase 3 adjuvant study, Merck and Moderna reported that their individualized mRNA cancer vaccine, intismeran, given alongside Merck’s checkpoint inhibitor Keytruda, delayed both recurrence and distant spread of melanoma after surgical removal. The trial represents the inaugural randomized evaluation of a neoantigen-based mRNA vaccine, a concept long viewed as promising but unproven in large-scale testing. While the companies have not yet disclosed the full data set, the preliminary results point to a possible breakthrough for patients with high-risk melanoma.
Success could broaden the role of mRNA platforms beyond infectious-disease vaccines to include targeted cancer therapeutics. If confirmed, the approach may offer longer survival and new hope for oncology patients worldwide.
