Merk and Trump discuss next steps for ending Ukraine war

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz met U.S. President Donald Trump to talk about advancing peace talks on the Ukraine conflict.

On Thursday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held talks with U.S. President Donald Trump to consider further actions aimed at concluding the war in Ukraine. The two leaders shared perspectives on the diplomatic path forward and also addressed ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Merz welcomed the passage of new U.S. sanctions legislation that targets the Russian regime and also includes Iran.

Meanwhile, daily long-range attacks continue between Ukraine and Russia, with a broad contact zone along the front line. Ukraine remains heavily dependent on Western financial aid as its economy suffers from repeated strikes on metal and agricultural export sectors.
