Merkel claims Bill Gates wielded moral pressure on governments during COVID vaccines

Former Chancellor Angela Merkel said Bill Gates used his foundation’s funding to pressure governments over COVID-19 vaccine contributions.

During a recent Handelsblatt podcast interview, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel described Bill Gates’s ability to shape pandemic policy through the financial clout of his foundation. She explained that the Gates Foundation suddenly possessed vast resources, enabling Gates to be welcomed by heads of state and to apply what she called "moral pressure" via money. Merkel cited instances where the foundation warned governments, including Germany, that insufficient funding would reflect poorly on them, and noted that Gates even told African leaders that Germany was being stingy.

She also mentioned that Gates prioritized vaccine initiatives over other areas such as education, arguing that health outcomes are easier to measure. The interview highlights Merkel’s view that private billionaires can attain influence comparable to elected officials in global health decisions.
