Mersing's conservation focus balances Johor's rapid development, boosting investor appeal

During the inauguration of the 2026 Mersing International Conservation Day at Mersing Harbour Centre, Johor Sustainability Centre chairman Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad emphasized that the district's conservation activities provide a counterbalance to the rapid industrial and data-centre expansion in Johor Bahru, Iskandar Puteri and Kulai. He said this equilibrium is vital for keeping Johor attractive to overseas investors, who increasingly demand adherence to international sustainability standards.

Citing the RM110 billion of investment secured in 2025, he highlighted sustainability as a decisive factor for data-centre operators. State assembly member Alwiyah Talib and CEO Syed Norul Shahril Syed Nasir were also present. The event, part of the Sustainable Travel Mersing Destination Coordination Group's programme and supported by UNDP Malaysia, aims to boost public awareness of nature conservation and sustainable tourism. Hasni added that the benefits of development in the more industrialised districts should also reach Mersing residents, reinforcing a balanced development ecosystem across the state.
