Mertxe Aizpurua Exits EH Bildu Candidate List, Leaves Congress After Three Terms
Mertxe Aizpurua will not appear on EH Bildu's slate for the upcoming general election and will cease serving as a deputy after three legislative periods.
EH Bildu has decided to omit Mertxe Aizpurua from its candidate roster for the next general election, meaning she will not seek re-election to the Spanish Congress after serving three terms since 2019. Aizpurua, a former journalist with ties to Egin and Gara and ex-mayor of Usurbil, has previously held the party's spokesperson position alongside Oskar Matute, who remains on the ballot. Her political résumé includes leading the Basque municipal network Udalbiltza and being the first left-wing nationalist to meet the Spanish prime minister at La Moncloa in 2025.
The coalition will soon release its complete candidate slate, and it has already indicated a Senate coalition with ERC. EH Bildu currently holds six seats in the Congress and five in the Senate.
Why it matters
Aizpurua's departure signals a shift in EH Bildu's candidate strategy ahead of the national election.
