Meryl Streep to Voice Aslan in Gerwig’s Musical-Inspired Narnia Adaptation

Greta Gerwig revealed that veteran actress Meryl Streep will voice the iconic lion Aslan in her new adaptation of C.S. Lewis’s Narnia series. Gerwig sought an actor over 70 who could convey depth without self-importance, describing Streep as both wise and capable of childlike awe.

The visual concept for Aslan, including its multicolored eyes and red-striped face, was inspired by David Bowie, while the overall tone of the film is meant to feel like a grand rock opera. Gerwig cited a range of classic rock musicians—Paul McCartney, David Gilmour, Pete Townshend, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant—as personal influences that shaped the movie’s musical spirit. The story adapts “The Magician’s Nephew,” a prequel featuring Digory and Polly, with Daniel Craig playing their uncle and a supporting cast that includes David McKenna, Beatrice Campbell, Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan and Ciarán Hinds. Initially set for a Thanksgiving 2026 debut, the film will now open in cinemas on Feb. 12, 2027, before arriving on Netflix on April 2.
