Met Gala exhibition honoring John Galliano scrapped after backlash

In July the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that its spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition and Met Gala would honor British designer John Galliano, making him only the third living designer to receive a solo show. The planned opening date coincided with Yom HaShoah, prompting condemnation from Jewish community leaders and criticism of Galliano’s past antisemitic remarks. After sustained pressure from city officials, major donors and community representatives, Galliano announced on Aug. 31 that he would withdraw from the exhibition. The museum said the exhibition will not proceed as planned and that the gala’s theme and schedule remain to be determined.
