Met Office issues 21-hour property-protection alert as Storm Chloe approaches

The Met Office has issued a 21-hour “protect property” warning for 42 areas as Storm Chloe gathers strength and is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain across parts of the UK and Ireland.

A third storm, designated Chloe, is expected to intensify over the next two days, prompting the Met Office to release a 21-hour “protect property” warning covering 42 locations across the United Kingdom and Ireland. Meteorologists note that while the system may not match the intensity of the recent Storm Boelo, it could still produce damaging gusts, especially in north-west Scotland, and heavy rain throughout Monday and Tuesday.

A yellow wind warning will come into force at 03:00 on Tuesday, remaining active until midnight for large parts of Scotland, northern England and northeastern Northern Ireland. This follows a weekend of extreme weather from Storms Austen and Boelo, which triggered amber wind warnings, widespread flooding, building damage, power cuts and major transport delays. The previous amber warnings are set to lapse at 21:00 today, but the new alert underscores the risk of winds over 70 mph and the need for residents to secure property. Forecasts suggest the weather may settle after Chloe passes, but authorities advise continued vigilance.
