Met Office warns of wetter, windier autumn and heightened flood risk

The Met Office’s latest seasonal outlook suggests the United Kingdom will experience an autumn that is both warmer and wetter than average, with odds roughly one-and-a-half to two times higher than typical. This pattern aligns with expectations from a powerful El Niño, one of the strongest on record, which historically brings increased precipitation and storminess to the UK and northern Europe in late autumn and early winter.

Nevertheless, forecasters stress that El Niño is only one of multiple climate drivers and does not alone determine the exact weather the country will face. The projected rise in rain and wind raises the probability of flooding across vulnerable areas. Meanwhile, the Environment Agency reports that nearly three-quarters of England remains in drought, despite recent rainfall improving conditions in some locations.
