Meta-analysis finds traffic-related air pollution may raise suicide risk

A new meta-study links exposure to traffic-related air pollutants, especially fine particles and nitrogen dioxide, with higher odds of suicide, attempts and suicidal thoughts.

A systematic review led by Queen's University Belfast pooled data from 29 international investigations to examine the relationship between air pollution and suicidal behavior. The study found that short- and long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and long-term exposure to nitrogen dioxide were significantly linked to higher rates of suicide deaths, attempts and suicidal ideation. Short-term exposure to coarser particles (PM10) and prolonged nitrogen dioxide exposure also correlated with increased risk, and a wider literature scan indicated possible associations with sulphur dioxide, ozone and noise pollution.

Published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health, the research highlights environmental exposures as potentially modifiable factors in suicide prevention strategies. Commentators noted that polluted neighborhoods often suffer from higher unemployment, social isolation and limited mental-health services, which could drive the observed associations. They emphasized that the evidence remains observational, so a direct causal link cannot yet be confirmed.

If air pollution contributes to suicide risk, reducing emissions could become a public-health tool for preventing mental-health crises.
