Meta releases software fix to stop hidden recordings on its smart glasses

Meta is rolling out a software update for its smart glasses that will halt the camera whenever the recording LED is covered, addressing a loophole that allowed covert filming. Users had previously been able to begin a recording and then conceal the light, a method highlighted in multiple online tutorials. The new fix builds on a recent patch that disables the camera if the LED is broken, reflecting Meta's response to growing criticism over secret recordings.

Instagram has already banned accounts linked to such misuse, though accessory markets still offer ways to bypass the light. Meta's VP of AR, Alex Himel, indicated that further privacy enhancements are in development to keep the LED as a reliable alert for bystanders. He noted that only a small fraction of users attempt to evade the safeguards, suggesting the existing measures are largely effective.
