METLEN, Thales Alenia Space and Thales Hellas sign pact for Greek defence satellite telecom system

METLEN, Thales Alenia Space and Thales Hellas have agreed to cooperate on a future Greek defence space telecommunications system, aiming to strengthen national autonomy and security.

METLEN, the Thales Alenia Space consortium (owned 67% by Thales and 33% by Leonardo) and Thales Hellas have signed a cooperation agreement focused on preparing for future prospects in Greece's defence space telecommunications programme. The deal merges the capabilities of the three companies to back Greece's ambition to enhance its dominance, security and strategic autonomy in the space domain, while maximising participation of the domestic industrial base through technology transfer and skill development.

Under the pact, the partners will devise an assessment framework to determine how their expertise and industrial assets can contribute to an integrated defence space telecom system. METLEN, via its M Technologies unit, may also provide French-manufacturing capacity for supply chains linked to satellites that Thales Alenia Space will produce and sell worldwide. The proposed satellite solution relies on a proven, reliable and fast-deployment communications platform, offering Greece secure, resilient and interference-proof links that bolster national security and space independence.

Why it matters

The agreement could enhance Greece's defence communications and foster a domestic high-tech space industry.
