Metrorex projects lower deficit and boosted passenger revenue for 2026 while expanding network

Metrorex expects a smaller loss in 2026, with reduced state subsidies, higher passenger income and a near-2 billion-lei investment plan for network expansion.

According to the budget draft from the Ministry of Transport, Metrorex anticipates a narrower loss in 2026, driven by smaller total outlays and a decline in state subsidies. Passenger-fare income is set to grow, with an estimated rise in the annual ridership count. Personnel expenses continue to dominate the cost structure, representing more than half of total spending.

The plan earmarks close to 2 billion lei for capital projects, focusing on the extension of Line 6 to Henri Coandă Airport, procurement of thirty new trains, and ongoing work on Lines 4 and 5. Staffing levels are projected to stay steady at the end-2025 level, while average gross monthly wages are slated to increase modestly.
