Mets deal pitcher Clay Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor to Cubs for prospect Jefferson Rojas

The New York Mets have completed a trade sending right-hander Clay Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor to the Chicago Cubs for in-field prospect Jefferson Rojas, according to a report by Jon Heyman. Holmes, a 33-year-old who posted a 2.39 ERA across nine starts before a broken leg sidelined him, made two rehab outings in July and is expected to rejoin the rotation soon; he holds a $12 million player option for the 2027 season.

Taylor, enjoying a resurgence, posted a.794 OPS and ten home runs, ranking among the Mets’ most productive hitters this year. The deal gives the Cubs a potential front-line starter and a solid bat, while the Mets add a young prospect as they look toward a rebuild after a difficult start to the season. Holmes previously played for the Yankees and began his MLB career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The trade marks Holmes’ first stint with a non-New York team since 2021.
