Mets' surge won’t alter David Stearns’ plan to hunt for a new manager

Despite a recent winning streak, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns says the club will still conduct a managerial search after the season, with interim boss Andy Green expected to return to the front office.

Even as the Mets enjoy a ten-win surge in their last thirteen contests, David Stearns, the organization’s president of baseball operations, maintains that a full-time managerial hire will be pursued after the season concludes. He told reporters that interim manager Andy Green, formerly the team’s vice president of player development and promoted to the dugout in June, is expected to rejoin the front office for the 2027 season.

Stearns declined to outline the specific traits he will seek in a new manager, emphasizing that the conversation will come later. He praised Green’s existing relationships with the club’s younger talent and veteran roster, calling that familiarity beneficial. The discussion also touched on first baseman Jorge Polanco’s limited defensive appearances due to ankle issues and the plan to improve his physical condition for future seasons. Additionally, outfielder Luis Robert Jr. is slated for consecutive starts in left field as part of his progression.

Why it matters

The decision shapes the Mets' leadership direction and impacts future team performance.
