Mexican cartel members indicted for trading fentanyl and meth for European weapons
Four alleged members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel were charged in the United States for arranging arms purchases in the Czech Republic in exchange for fentanyl and methamphetamine.
U.S. prosecutors disclosed indictments against four individuals linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel for conspiring to buy European weaponry in the Czech Republic and swapping it for fentanyl and methamphetamine shipped to the United States. The alleged arms haul comprised various machine guns, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, mortar launchers and related ammunition. Edgar Alejandro Lopez Velasco and Jose Miguel Alvarado Morales have already been extradited and faced a federal judge in Tampa, while Noe Diaz Jimenez and Leobardo Gaxiola Lopez remain awaiting extradition.
The defendants face charges of drug importation conspiracy, firearms trafficking and related offenses, each punishable by up to life imprisonment. The indictment follows recent U.S. actions targeting the cartel, including new rewards for information on its leader Juan Carlos Gonzalez and sanctions against dozens of affiliated individuals and entities.
