Mexican firefighting crews expected to aid battle against Okanagan Lake blaze

British Columbia authorities expect about a hundred Mexican firefighters to reach the Okanagan Lake region on Tuesday to assist with a massive wildfire that has displaced 20,000 people. The fire, covering roughly 156 square kilometres, ignited on Friday and has already claimed the life of an 80-year-old woman in Meadow Valley and destroyed many residences. Hugh Murdoch of the provincial Wildfire Service described the operation as a monumental task due to rugged terrain, high temperatures, and ember-driven spot fires that limit direct attack options.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have opened a criminal probe into the blaze’s origin. Summerland’s mayor warned residents that returning home will be difficult and may take considerable time. The province also faces about 100 other wildfires, with roughly half out of control and a heightened risk of lightning-started fires in the interior.
