Mexican forces seize dozens of exotic animals and fuel during border raid
Authorities in Tamaulipas rescued a large group of exotic and endangered wildlife while confiscating fuel and weapons in raids on properties linked to smuggling operations.
Mexican officials announced that a series of raids in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas rescued a diverse collection of exotic animals, such as Bengal tigers, lions, jaguars, buffalo, spider monkeys, a camel and a green macaw, among others. The operation, aimed at disrupting fuel smuggling networks, also seized 18,000 gallons of diesel, fuel tanks, pumps, firearms and related equipment across five properties. Authorities detained one suspect during the sweeps.
This effort is part of an intensified campaign against the illicit fuel trade, which has grown into a lucrative activity for cartels after earlier high-profile seizures and prosecutions of cartel figures. Recent charges have been filed against a senior officer expelled from Argentina and a former state governor for involvement in fuel theft. The crackdown reflects ongoing concerns about the profitability of fuel smuggling, known locally as huachicol, for criminal groups.
