Mexican navy rescues two missing fishermen after five days adrift
Two fishermen who vanished on August 14 were located alive inside a cooler floating 150 miles off Chiapas and rescued by the Mexican navy.
A distress signal was sent after two fishermen failed to report in since August 14 while working on the boat Camaronera. The Mexican navy deployed both ships and aircraft to sweep a wide area of the Pacific Ocean. Search teams spotted a cooler bobbing about 150 miles off the coast of Chiapas, with the two men inside.
Photos released by the Secretariat of the Navy show the survivors being lifted onto a patrol vessel, examined medically, and then flown to a port for further care. One fisherman was later seen on a stretcher and then in a wheelchair, while the other was also transported on a stretcher. Both were eventually returned to their families following the examinations.
Why it matters
The rescue highlights the navy's role in protecting lives at sea and the importance of rapid response to maritime emergencies.
