Mexican Senate Approves Arrival of 139 U.S. Soldiers for Joint Training

On Monday, Mexico’s Senate gave unanimous approval for a group of 139 United States soldiers, drawn from the 101st Airborne Division, to conduct training at the Santa Gertrudis military installation in Chihuahua between September 20 and 30. The resolution, presented as urgent by President Claudia Sheinbaum, received all 75 votes in favor and was framed as a standard element of the two nations’ armed-forces partnership, intended to enhance both individual and collective readiness and to strengthen joint cooperation mechanisms.
The troops will arrive aboard a U.S. Air Force plane, armed, and will be permitted to remain at the base, located about 320 miles south of the U.S. border, through the end of the month. Their deployment comes months after a political controversy concerning CIA agents operating in Chihuahua and reflects continued security coordination despite lingering concerns about interference from the Donald Trump administration. Officials emphasized that the exercise is routine and aimed at improving bilateral military ties.
