MHP Chief Bahçeli Cautions Greece That Arms Purchases Won’t Ensure Security Without Peace
Devlet Bahçeli warned Greece that its military alliances and weapons acquisitions cannot guarantee safety unless it achieves peaceful relations with neighboring states.
On Tuesday, October 13, Devlet Bahçeli, head of Turkey’s Nationalist Movement Party, addressed Greece, arguing that defense pacts and arms procurement alone cannot provide genuine security without peaceful neighborly ties. He called on Athens to draw lessons from history and suggested that any attempt to use military strength to intimidate Turkey would be futile, asserting that no power can intimidate his country. Bahçeli emphasized that Greece’s sense of safety is contingent on establishing peace with surrounding nations, particularly Turkey.
He rejected the idea that Greece’s growing arsenal could coerce Turkey, adopting a firm tone. The statements tie Greece’s strategic posture directly to its diplomatic relationship with Turkey.
