Miami man gets 20 years for posing as elderly woman's son and seizing her home
A 67-year-old Miami-Dade resident was sentenced to two decades in prison for impersonating a 94-year-old woman's son, siphoning her benefits and adding himself to the title of her $625,000 house.
Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office announced that Alejandro Diaz Torriente, 67, received a 20-year prison term for exploiting a 94-year-old woman who lived alone in El Portal. After the woman was declared legally incompetent in 2021, Diaz Torriente, who had known her as a friend, began calling her "mom" and pretended to be her son during medical visits. Investigators uncovered a pattern of financial abuse, including the diversion of her Social Security benefits and cash withdrawals totaling roughly $20,000.
He also forged a deed that listed him as a joint tenant with rights of survivorship, giving him claim to the $625,000 home and enabling him to change the locks. The sentencing includes a subsequent 10-year probation period. State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle emphasized that the case serves as a warning against targeting vulnerable seniors.
