Michigan Supreme Court decision wipes Larry Nassar from state sex offender list

A Michigan Supreme Court ruling removed former gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar from the state's sex offender registry, along with thousands of other pre-2011 offenders.

The Michigan Supreme Court ruled that recent changes to the state's Sex Offender Registration Act cannot be enforced for offenses committed before July 1 2011. As a result, the Michigan State Police removed roughly 20,000 offenders, including former USA gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar, from the public registry. Prosecutors highlighted that the court's interpretation sidesteps legislative authority and questioned the utility of such lists.

Eaton County Prosecutor Doug Lloyd publicly criticized the judgment, warning it could allow released offenders to remain hidden from the community. Nassar, convicted for sexually assaulting hundreds of gymnasts and currently serving multiple prison sentences, will no longer be searchable in the registry. The decision raises concerns about transparency for thousands of offenders across the state.

Why it matters

The ruling limits public access to information about past sex offenders, affecting community safety and legal oversight.
