Microplastics Turn Soil into Trojan Horses, Spreading Toxins and Antibiotic Resistance

A five-year EU-funded study found microplastics in all 227 surveyed European farms, acting like Trojan horses that ferry pollutants, pesticides and resistant microbes through soil.

Over five years, an EU-backed consortium examined soil from 227 agricultural sites in 11 European nations, uncovering microplastics in every location and publishing 22 scientific papers on the findings. The particles act as vectors, binding pesticides, veterinary drugs, metals and bacteria, a mechanism described as a “Trojan horse” that can boost the diffusion of pathogens and antibiotic-resistance genes, particularly when the plastics are very small.

The study identified “plastisphere” surfaces where microbes thrive, with higher toxin levels observed in Swiss fields rich in tire-wear particles. Soil fauna such as earthworms experienced disrupted nutrient cycles, and lettuce plants showed reduced leaf area, chlorophyll and biomass, effects that intensified under drought stress. The research also highlighted that biodegradable plastics are not inherently safe, as they break down into microplastics that persist in soil. Scientists call for standardized monitoring, full manufacturer transparency and comprehensive risk assessments to protect long-term food production and soil health.
